A being known as the [[Entity]] will break the fourth wall in multiple ways, from opening error messages addressing the player's name to changing the desktop background. If you manually close the game's window or quit the game, after relaunch you are told that Niko is dead (and that you killed them), and the game ends, hence the title OneShot. In the remake, closing the game manually instead saves the game, and refraining from doing so through the entire playthrough earns you the achievement "Oneshot", a reference to the original version.

OneShot is a game developed in a modified version of RPG Maker 2003 by Eliza Velasquez and Nightmargin, released on June 30th, 2014. You play the role of a god who must guide the protagonist, Niko, through a strange world inhabited by robots, with the ultimate goal of saving the world and returning Niko home.

A being known as the Entity will break the fourth wall in multiple ways, from opening error messages addressing the player's name to changing the desktop background.

Saving the game is done by resting at the beds found in the game's world. Going to bed closes the game automatically, and upon opening the game, you are greeted by a dream sequence that entails how Niko used to live before being mysteriously brought to this world.

The game was made in a month for the 2014 Indie Game Maker Contest, and was remade and extended by the original team with the addition of GIRakaCHEEZER in 2016 in RPG Maker XP and published by Degica. The features added include the ability to save the game by closing the window, additional playthroughs, and more permanent consequences.

Summary

You are to guide a child through a mysterious world on a mission to restore it's long dead sun.

...Of course, things are never that simple.

The world knows you exist.

The consequences are real.

Saving the world may be impossible.

You only have one shot.

Reception

The original version of the game has been tagged a "Featured Game" in rpgmaker.net and has been downloaded 35,000+ times.

OneShot also currently has a 10/10 rating and an estimation of 5,000+ reviews on Steam, with a percentage of 98% of the user reviews for the game positive. Additionally, it currently has a score of 81 on Metacritic and a User Score of 8.3. [1]

OneShot was also a nominee in the PC category of 2017's Golden Joystick Awards.[2]
